How to Make the Perfect Cold Brew at Home

by Bec Bligh | March 18, 2026

If you've been eyeing our Cold Brew Kit and wondering what the fuss is about, we made a step-by-step video with Sydney café owner and barista Nikky to show you exactly how it works. Here's everything you need to know in written form.

First Up: What Actually Is Cold Brew?

Cold brew isn't just iced coffee with a fancy name. It's coarsely ground coffee submerged in cold or room temperature water for 12 to 24 hours. That long, slow extraction is what gives it its character. It produces a smooth coffee naturally low in acidity and free from the harsh bitterness you can get from hot brewing methods. Nikky brews his for around 12 hours at his café, which is the sweet spot we'd recommend starting with.

What You'll Need

  • Ever Vessel Maxi (26oz / 750mL) or Super Maxi (36oz / 1L)
  • Cold Brew Kit the ultrafine 100μm stainless steel filter
  • Coarsely ground coffee freshly ground if possible
  • Cold or room temperature water

The Recipe: Keep It Simple with a 1:10 Ratio

The golden rule is 1 part coffee to 10 parts water. That's it. Don't overthink it.

For a single cup:

  • 1 oz (30g) of coarsely ground coffee
  • 10 oz (300mL) of water

The Super Maxi holds up to three cups, so just triple the recipe and you're good to.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Grind your coffee coarsely. Coarse is key. A fine grind will over-extract and turn bitter.

2. Load the filter. Add your ground coffee into the Cold Brew Kit filter.

3. Add water to your bottle. Pour your measured water into the Maxi or Super Maxi bottle first.

4. Drop in the filter and seal. Lower the filter into the bottle, screw the lid on tight, and you're done with the hard part.

5. Refrigerate overnight. Pop it in the fridge. You can leave it at room temperature, but the fridge keeps it cold and ready to drink straight away. Leave for between 12 to 24 hours.

6. Remove the filter in the morning. Pull out the filter, and your cold brew is ready. Add ice, a splash of milk, or drink it straight.

A Note on the Super Maxi + Single Cup Batches

If you're only making one cup in the Super Maxi, the filter won't quite reach the water when placed upright. Easy fix: invert the bottle before putting it in the fridge. This ensures full extraction and you won't miss out on any flavour.

Why Bother Making It at Home?

Cold brew in the fridge means your morning routine just got a whole lot easier. No machine to turn on, no noise, no waiting in line. Pull the filter out, add some ice, and you're out the door. Or don't even add ice, it's already cold!

It also means you know exactly what's in it: good coffee, water, and nothing else.
